This study sought to investigate and assess the relevance, teaching approach and performance of Vocational Training with special reference to employment generation in general and self-employment in particular. A questionnaire was administered to a total of eighty seven former Vocational trainees of three Government Vocational Training Centres namely Dar es Salaam, Dodoma and Mwanza Regional Vocational Training and Service Centres. Among the major findings are: That the current basic Vocational Training course is inadequate in terms of preparing youths for self employment or wage employment. Thus current Vocational Training programmes have not had a significant impact in enhancing self-employment. that the present training approach is too much dominated by theoretical teaching to the near neglect of practical skills development through practical work; and workshop equipment and tools are in some courses inadequate, in numbers, such that student. Groups for practical work are too big to allow each student adequate practice and effective teacher's attention. The following two recommendations are among the several other recommendations: The basic Vocational Training Course should be reviewed in order to strengthen it and give priority to the development of basic practical skills. The duration of the Basic Vocational Training course should be extended from the present twelve months to either eighteen months or two yearsen_US
