Abstract
The purpose of this study was to identify the attitudes of principals towards physical activity and the teaching of physical education and sport in teachers colleges in Tanzania. Furthermore the study tried to interpret how teachers and students participated in physical education and sport activities in their colleges. a total of 100 respondents were used to collect data that is 4 principals, 16 teachers and 80 students from 4 Teachers Colleges (Alabamian, Ubungo Islamic. Ilonga and Morogoro). Specific variables in this study were attitudes of principals, teaching/ learning materials, sport facilities and equipment. Methods used for data collection were questionnaire, interview, observation and documentation. The findings showed that principals do not given much support to physical education and sport activities. The in between teachers colleges and the country at large. Also lack of facilities, equipment, qualified physical education and sport teachers, inadequate time allocation were critical barriers. This means that there is a need to train more physical education and sport teachers and a need to ensure that facilities, equipment, adequate time allocation, motivations and other incentives are given for the improvement of physical education ad sport in teachers colleges and the country at large. Lastly there is a need to undertaken as many studies as possible on physical education and sport in teachers colleges and schools to that the problems should be known and be eradicated accordingly.
