Abstract
The study examined teaching and learning conditions for students with hearing impairment in inclusive secondary schools in Tanzania. Specifically, this study assessed the availability and qualifications of teachers, teaching and learning approaches, the availability and use of learning and teaching equipment/materials, the language of instruction as well as communication modes in inclusive secondary schools. Purposive, stratified and random sampling procedures were used to select a sample of 192 participants in the study. Interviews, focus group discussions, questionnaires, observation and documentary review were used for data collection. The study findings revealed that inclusive secondary schools for students with hearing impairment operated with an acute shortage of specialist teachers, and those who were available were diploma holders. The findings also revealed that teachers used inappropriate and irrelevant teaching approaches. Furthermore, most of the schools were short of teaching and learning materials/equipment. Teachers used inappropriate language of instruction, and communication between teachers and students was extremely limited. The study recommends that, more efforts should be made in training more specialist teachers and audiologist's. The teaching and learning equipment should be accessible to all students. Further, available specialist teachers should provide special sign language classes for both hearing and hearing impaired students. Moreover, there should be seminars and workshops to familiarize regular classroom teachers with strategies to use for teaching students with hearing impairment in inclusive schools.
