The main concern of this study is to examine the economic impact of colonial plantations on the local people of Tanzania. The study used Lushoto district as a casestudy. It sought first of all, to understand the pre-colonial economic situation in lushoto before the establishment of colonial plantation farms and thereafterto examine the methods used to establish colonialism and colonial plantation farms in particular.Morever the economic impacts of colonial plantations on the people of lushoto were investigated. In order to achieve its goal, thestudy collected relevant information from oral interviews as well as archival, secondary sources and analyzed them in accordance with the research objectives. These sources have revealed that before the establishment of colonial plantations in lushoto district, the people of Lushoto conducted economic activities such as crop cultivation, trade and animal keeping in order supporting their lives. In addition, the Shambaa had a well-organized land distribution system, whereby the land was owned by the king who was in charge of land, labour, production, trade, animal keeping and collective of tribute. The establishment of colonial plantations in different areas of lushoto generated varied economic consequences which included the establishment of infrastructure, land alienation, labourquestion, and decrease of food production, introduction of colonial education and introduction of exotic forestry species which were not friendly to environment.en_US
