Abstract
This study aimed at assessing tourism associated activities in Saadani National Park. Specifically, the study intended to find out the extent of operation of the tourism associated livelihood activities for these communities; to find out constraints underpinning the performance of these local people’s livelihood activities; and find out ways of offsetting the constraints. Questionnaire and interview schedules were administered in collection of data. The data collected were analyzed by using SPSS. The findings revealed that the tourism associated livelihood activities in the study area are underperforming different to what was envisaged by the tourism policy (1999) and Tourism Master Plan and strategies (2002). Setbacks for this underperformance were as follows: Government’s failure to implement nt the pro-poor tourism policy strategies; Lack of adequate education and capabilities; lack of financial capital; inefficient tourism market caused by inefficient promotion of tourists’ attractions in the area; disenfranchisement of local people from natural resources and poor land use planning, poor infrastructure and communication. Lastly, the researcher recommends areas for further study as follows: Role of government policies on tourism development and rural livelihood diversification; Tourists’ product promotion for rural people’s livelihood diversification; and the role NGOs, and private sector in that endeavour
