Abstract

This study aimed at exploring caregivers' knowledge in the provision of care and support to AIDS orphaned children in Maneromango sokoni village. Kisarawe district in coast region. The study focused on caregivers' knowledge (1) orphans' needs and their provision to orphans, (2) HIV/AIDS prevention and (3) income generation skills and the provision of those skills. The study was designed in the form of case study. Purposeful and criterion sampling techniques were used to select 36 participants for the study. Participant sample included caregivers, orphans, JIMOWOCO officials, MVC committee member, the village chairperson, and district social welfare official. Semi structure interviews, observation and documentary analysis were employed in this study. Content analysis was used for data analysis. The findings indicated that majority of caregivers had inadequate knowledge on orphans' needs, HIV/AIDS prevention and income generation skills. This led to the provision of inadequate needs, HIV/AIDS information and income generation skills. Children learnt income generation skills through socialization process. It was recommended that there is a need to train caregivers on children psychosocial needs and HIV/AIDS prevention. In the case of income generation skills there is a need of establishing training centers for post primary schools children in community.
