dc.description.abstract | There is a perception, to some people, that the teaching of Communication Skills to students in institutions of higher learning has very little to do with their academic specialties. They claim, for example, that Communication Skills has no bearing whatsoever on students' specialized disciplines, and because of a tendency for some teachers to isolate Communication Skills from other specialized subjects, students fail to appreciate the connection between the former and the latter. Consequently, students are demotivated to learn Communication Skills. This study was intended to investigate the extent to which specialized subjects are incorporated in the teaching of Communication Skills. The survey made to institution of higher learning in Dar es Salaam and Morogoro revealed through questionnaires, interviews, documentary reviews and observation that the teaching is largely disconnected. Syllabuses do not reflect students' specialized disciplines, lesson notes, and examination items appear more or less like that of English language, and most of the used text books are not discipline reflective. It is recommended that the teachers should incorporate students' specialized disciplines by making use of discipline focused texts, vocabulary and language styles. | en_US |
