It is suggested that, among other things, the number of women holding senior level public service positions is low because their pool from which they can be competitively employed is small. Those who are already in employment lack confidence and ability to vie for higher level positions when they arise. The government of Tanzania has taken several measures to deal with the said constraints over the last twenty years. This study reviewed efforts in trying to increase the number of women into senior level and decision-making positions during the last two decades. Specifically, it assessed the extent to which the government sponsorship programme whereby women in public service employment were sponsored to pursue master degrees contributed to increasing in number of women holding senior level positions in the public service. The study concludes that there is still a lot to be done in uplifting women to occupy senior level positions. Their numbers in the senior level and decision-making positions still leaves a lot to be disired. It remains to be a challenge not only to the government but also to those in leadership and management positions within the public service because diverse workforce composed of both men and women at management level is poised to realize new efficiencies in provision of public services.en_US
