Abstract
This study was undertaken to determine the use of electronic information resources on research based on citations as can be seen in theses/dissertations of Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (F ASS) postgraduate students of the University of Dar es Salaam from 1996 to 2005. The University of Dar es Salaam was selected because it is the oldest university in Tanzania and has a large population of postgraduate students and a strong collection of East Africana materials including theses and dissertations. Simple random sampling was applied to select a sample of 100 theses/dissertations and purposive sampling to select 15 former FASS postgraduate students from the 1996 to 2005. The major data collection methods were citation analysis and interviews. Key findings revealed a heavy reliance on print information resources while citation of electronic information resources was minimal. Therefore, it is concluded that, the available electronic information resources were underutilized. It is recommended that universities should intensify information literacy training and publicity of electronic information resources, build and develop a strong electronic information resource base and subscribe to more electronic books and journals.
