The purpose of this thesis is to investigate fertility trends in Mainland Tanzania. Data on the age structure, current and retrospective fertility are examined in Chapter 2 for evidence of changes in fertility. Information was collected on fertility histories in the 1973 inquiry and this is used in the third, fourth and fifth chapters. Chapter 3 considers the fertility of cohorts of women moving through the various age intervals of the reproductive span. The fourth chapter examines the fertility rate of cohorts in five year periods before the NDS. Errors of omission of live births, birth misplacement and age misstatement are dealt with in the fifth chapter. Simulations are used to assess the implications of these errors for observed trends.en_US
