Abstract
The objective of this study is to investigate the impact of the proximate determinants of fertility, that is, marriage, postpartum infecundability due to lactation and contraception, on the level and pattern of fertility in Kilimanjaro region. The study was carried out through a sample survey of women aged 15-49 years, and the data was analysed using the Bongaarts (1978) analytical framework. The proximate determinants in this study were also correlated with education and occupation. The study findings demonstrated that the three proximate determinants suppress fertility by 62 percent from the potential maximum of 15.3 to the near actual TFR of 5.85. Non-marriage alone contributes to 36 percent suppression as compared to 31 and 14 percent suppression of contraception and postpartum infecundability respectively. In regard of educational levels, the inhibiting effects of fertility were 37, 57 and 71 percents for women with zero, primary and secondary education and above respectively. The corresponding TFR were 9.15, 6.5 and 4.4 for the three educational classes respectively. The analysis of the study according to occupational groups found the reduction of fertility by 57.4, 57.2, 77.1 and 55.5 percents for the agrarians, business, employed and 'others' category respectively, with respective TFR of 6.5, 6.6, 3.3 and 6.8. The study came out with the conclusive statement that, the most important proximate determinant of fertility in Kilimanjaro is marriage, followed by contraception and lastly postpartum infecundability.
