Abstract
The purpose of the study was to identify factors, which determined student’ enrolment in DAE programme at the IAE, Specifically, the researcher investigated the extent to which economic related factors, institutional related factors, and students’ personal factors determined enrolment in the DAE programme. The study was conducted at the IAE headquarters in Dar es Salaam, The sample included IAE Senior Officers, Heads of Departments, students, graduates and applicants. Sampling methods were both purposive and random. Both qualitative and quantitative research approaches were employed during data collection. The data collection methods included interviews, questionnaires, observation, documentary review and focus group discussion. Findings revealed that economic factors were great determinants for students’ enrolment. Institutional factors were also significantly influencing enrolment. Also, personal factors determined enrolment. Based on these findings, the researcher recommended that employers and sponsors should pay full sponsorship to enable students meet all costs during the training. In another vein, the IAE should enable students and the staff to be computer literate. Furthermore, the IAE management should recruit enough and qualified staff. Available physical resources and facilities should be effectively utilised. Moreover, the IAE should arrange for accommodation of some students in order to solve transport problems. The IAE should as well establish a more effective system of publicising itself and the programmes, which it runs. The study is expected to provide new ideas to employers in the education sector on the importance of DAE to the nation because it increases skilful personnel in the adult education sector. In this regard, DAE graduates are potential resources as far as eradication of illiteracy and promotion of continuing education in the country are concerned. In turn, measures will help in poverty alleviation among Tanzanians.
