Abstract
Job satisfaction has been the focus of many research studies because of its importance to employing organizations. With today’s mobile and floating working population it has become increasingly important for organizations to know how they can motivate their employees so as to influence job satisfaction of workers. The main objective of this research was to assess the influence of training and development programmes on job satisfaction in the health sector. The health workers in Ruvuma regional hospital were taken as the case study to represent the whole. Data collection was done through administering questionnaires which had items with five (5) point scales to different health workers. Reading various documents related to the study and interviewing key resource persons from the Regional hospital staff were also used in data collection. A simple random sample of 80 employees was chosen for this study. The nine common job related variables were used to measure job satisfaction of health workers. Data was analysed interpretively with the guide of research questions and SPSS assisted in computing percentages and tabulation. The research findings revealed that Training and Development Programmes influenced job satisfaction of workers through sense of achievement, co-workers, job content, working harder, relationship with supervisor, use of initiative and working for organisation but not working environment and job security variables. Deliberate efforts should be made by the government through its responsible ministry to improve the ways and the manner in which training and development programmes have been provided and essential training need assessment (TNA) should always be adhered to so as to yield positive impact on job satisfaction of health workers.
