Recently, there has been an increase in contribution of NGOs in Tanzanian development, such as in job creation, poverty alleviation, economic improvement, social improvement and community improvement. Despite their contribution to the country, NGOs face a number of challenges whereby some Local NGOs are established but after very short period they close their operations. Also when implementing programs, the Local NGOs encounter various challenges including, political interference, competition from other NGOs, lack of ownership and lack of strategy. However, the issue of strategy and its effects on the performance of Local NGOs had yet to be well comprehended. The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between strategic management practices (environmental scanning, strategy formulation, strategy implementation, Strategy monitoring and evaluation) and performance of Local NGOs in Tanzania. A survey study was conducted among Local NGOs which operate in Dar es Salaam. Purposive sampling was done drawing from the individuals working with Local NGOs. The researcher performed data collection by using structured questionnaires where 115 questionnaires were distributed to respondents and a total of 102 questionnaires were successfully returned. Data were analyzed through descriptive statistics and regression analysis was used to ascertain the relationship between dependent and independent variables. Results from this study shows that strategy monitoring and evaluation, strategy formulation and environmental scanning influence the organization performance with different levels of significance. Only Strategy monitoring and evaluation appear to have significantly explaining the performance of Local NGOs.The study recommends that Local NGOs should ensure that they have better strategy monitoring and evaluation mechanism so as to attain high organization performance, Furthermore Local NGOs should conduct appropriate environmental analysis in order to attain adequate performance. Also the Local NGOs should ensure strategies are well formulated with a definite purpose of achieving the organization performance.en_US
