The main purpose of this study was to identify the influential strategic planning principles and approaches towards the development of liveable eco-cities (satellite centres) in Dar es Salaam. Among the two main strategies identified in the study are (1) Upgrading the unplanned areas and minimizing the overcrowding slums in the city (2) the Bus Rapid Transit for Dar es Salaam (DART/BRT) aiming at reducing environmental problems and (3) Stimulate planned land development, and bring urban services closer to residents thus decongesting the city centre. This finding based on the study carried out in Kinondoni Municipality having a sample size of one hundred and one (101) respondents. Twenty one (21) of them were Key informants and eighty (80) were the households around the project. Both qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection and analysis were involved, whereby unstructured interviews, Observation and questionnaires were employed. Data collected from both secondary and primary sources were analyzed with the application of various methods such as textual analysis, Geographical Information System (GIS) on photographing and statistical packaging. The study findings indicates that; the Kinondoni Municipal is planning to build satellite centres in some areas such as the Luguruni satellite centre, its main challenge is lack of people’s participation in the process of planning and management of the Municipal developmental sectors such as creation of eco-cities for a better future. Despite this challenge there are many opportunities that people can be offered after the completion of the project such as (1) reduction of routes to the city centre (traffic jam), (2) expansion of the city and (3) availability of social services and employment opportunities.en_US
