This study examined the role of motivation on employee’s retention in the public sector in Tanzania. The study was conducted in Kinondoni Municipal Council. Four objectives guided this study. These objectives were to examine the extent to which work incentives lead to employees retention; to examine the extent to which staff training and development lead to employees retention; to find out the extent to which working environment influence employees retention; to examine the extent to which recognition at work influences employees retention. Purposive sampling technique was used to select a sample of 102 participants at Kinondoni Municipal Council. Questionnaires and documentary review were used in data collection. Both quantitative and qualitative design approaches were employed for data analysis. The findings reveal that work incentive factors (bonuses, benefits, loans with low interest, allowances and salary), staff training and development factors (career development and employee retention, provision of allowances for training, recognition and rewards for highly trained employees, opportunities for further studies, access to training, seminars and workshop), working environment factors (availability of working facilities, organization, administration and policy of the organization, distance from home to work, physical environment of the organization, job security), and recognition at work factors are strong factors for employee retention in the public sector in Tanzania. Also the study found that most of the employees at Kinondoni Municipal Council are not satisfied with the incentives they receive and the working environment are not favourable for them hence some of them are looking for new jobs in other institutions. The study recommends that, the government should improve work incentives, make sure that training and development is considered and done fairly to all employees, improve the working environment so that employees should feel comfortable while working which will attract them to remain working in the public sector. Also it is recommended that the government should make sure that there is recognition at work to the employees that is because when an employee feels that his or her contribution at the organization is recognized and is treated fairly then it makes him or her feel that he or she is part of the organization and reduces the chances of him or her thinking of leaving the organization.en_US
