dc.description.abstractProject sustainability is one of the most critical challenges for all grassroots, national and international development projects, that have assisted community/government to implement community based project to meet the millennium development goal. The purpose of this study was to assess sustainability of Maji yetu project in Tandale ward at Kinondoni municipality, Tanzania; identify ways used to implement Maji yetu project in Tandale ward, examine the extent of community participation from the beginning to the end of Maji yetu project and determine strategies used to ensure sustainability of maji yetu project on improving community need. Data were collected from 8 committee members of the water project, 7 local government leaders (6 street chairmen and 1 Tandale WEO), 90 community members who are participating in the project, 2 key informants from Kinondoni municipal water engineering sector and various documentary sources using interview schedule, researcher’s diary and checklist. Quantitative data were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) and NVIVO software was used to analyze qualitative data. It was found that sustainability of Maji yetu project requires consideration and analysis of variety factors which need commitment of all stakeholders. It was recommended that critical factors in ensuring sustainability is to let the community participate fully from the beginning to the end so that they can plan for their development to ensure commitment and feel a sense of ownership, which will ensure efficiency, effectiveness and sustainability of the project. The study also suggested that projects should be managed by highly competent personnel to increase its efficiency and sustainability.en_US
