This study examined the impact of socio economic factors on infant and child mortality in Uyui District. The influence to which these socio-economic factors operate to bring an impact on infant and child mortality was investigated. Understanding the influence and/ or effects of factors responsible for infant and child mortality may facilitate improvement of reproductive and maternal health in Tanzania. The study included maternal education, mother occupation, child spacing, inadequate health facilities and services, source of drinking water, status of drinking water (Boiled or not boiled ), and source of income of the households head. Data on mortality and the related variables were collected in field survey conducted in Uyui District in July, 2013. The main respondents were women of reproductive ages and the unit of study was household. Bivariate and multivariate analysis was used to identify socio economic variables which have a significant effect on infant and child mortality. Maternal education, occupation of the mother, age at first child bearing, child spacing, and source of water were found to have a significant effect on infant and child mortality. On the other hand, occupation of the household head and education had no influence on infant and child mortality in the study area. From those findings the study suggests that the Government should improve economic and social condition (Health facilities and services) in Uyui District to reduce the level of infant and child mortality. In addition, the community should be ready to accept health interventions promoted by the government to reduce maternal and child mortality.en_US
