Abstract

This study sought to critically examine one: the role of Corporate and Government sectors in assisting retrenches to cope up with unemployment situation. Research methodology and Data collected and analyzed indicated that there had not been meaningful assistances provided by the Government specifically to help retrenchees despite the assistances provided by one company to its retrenchees, among the two which were the center of this study. Two, examine also, the coping up mechanisms used by retrenchees to easy the hardship of life, following retrenchment. To this end this study revealed that coping mechanisms vary across education level, rank of employment and retrenchment packages paid to retrenchees. Those with good education and higher employment ranks were well off as compared to those with less education and lower ranks in their employment as will be explained throughout this study.
