Abstract
Among the problems faced by our work organizations is the poor management of health and safety functions which are the core functions to creating job satisfaction to employees which eventually leads to increased performances of the work organizations. The objective of this study is to enumerate the strategies which can be deployed by the construction industry in ensuring that the health and safety function is improved and managed properly in the industry. A well managed health and safety function leads to increased productivity and creates jobs satisfaction to employees and increased profitability to the work organization through achievement of organizational goals. In carrying out this study, research instruments such as questionnaires, interviews and observations were used. Qualitative and quantitative analysis were used in the study, whereby units of inquiry for this study were the Chief Executive, Engineers, Supervisors, Machine Operators and other office supporting staff of Norenco Construction Company. The research found out that in order to adhere to the improvement and proper management of health and safety functions, various strategies must be deployed to overcome several constraints which includes insufficient involvement of top management, absence of individual commitment and others. Such strategies include the top management support and involvement of individual employees in the design of those strategies as they are the implementers of those designed strategies. The researcher recommended that top management must take full support to ensure that health and safety functions are adhered to in a work organization, and regular check up and educational seminars and training in respect of health and safety functions to employees be conducted at their place of work.
