dc.description.abstract | This study examines empirically the fundamental determinants of foreign exchange reserve holdings in Tanzania during the 1971 – 2001 period and draw policy implications and recommendations. The study was thought to be significant owing to the importance of foreign exchange reserves in stabilizing the economy particularly the Tanzanian economy. In the course of analysis, cointegration analysis was employed. The empirical results show that total population, the volatility of ral export receipts, import of goods and services as a share of GDP and second lags of foreign exchange reserves significantly and positively affected the foreign exchange reserves in the short run. People’s standard of living, exchange rate flexibility and external debt servicing significantly and positively affected the foreign exchange reserves in the long run. Also, the nominal exchange rate flexibility had a significant but negative influence on foreign exchange reserves in the short run and positive influence in the long run. There are important policy implications of the results. Promoting exports, controlling imports, improving peoples’ health and income and maintaining a more flexible exchange rate, are vital areas of intervention in order to ensure adequate current and future foreign exchange reserves in Tanzania. | en_US |
