Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate factors affecting women Market Place Vendors, A case study of Ilala Market, the study was developed under the assumption that Women play vital role in society economic development, however, despite of the total contribution made by women in the economy there is low visibility of the role of women entrepreneurs in the Tanzania economy.
Similarly most academic literature regarding women entrepreneurs has identified problems facing women entrepreneurs and a number of solution have been suggested, but very few specific case studies concerning women entrepreneurs in market places have been discussed, that is why there was much need to undertake this study.
In this study a sample of 50 respondents of women entrepreneurs at Ilala markets were involved in providing information to this study by means of a set of administered questionnaires, semi-structured personal interviews and documentary. Data collected was analyzed by the use of content analysis.
The main key statistical findings revealed that there is existence of challenges facing women Market Place Vendor at Ilala market which includes, limited access to credit and high interest rates from financial institutions, interdependence of business and family finance and lack of basic entrepreneurial skills. Responsibilities of providing for the extended family and relatives, absence of customer’s movement along the market, lack of safety cupboards and refrigerators’ for preservatives of goods from decay, women workload were also problems identified by the study.
Through the findings the research recommends that government to take immediate action on the pending problems and emphasize on initiating Women Poverty Eradication Fund for grants and loans disbursements with affordable interest rates. Also government schemes should motivate women entrepreneurs to engage in small scale and large scale business ventures, committed NGO’s, psychologist and managerial experts should provide counseling to existing emerging women entrepreneurs. There should also be a provision of business consultation so as to increase the capacity building to women entrepreneurs, women should make personal effort in obtaining entrepreneur skills by attending short course and seminars so as to be competitive in the globalized market.
