Abstract
The Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) all over the world play a significant role in social and economic development. However, in developing countries like Tanzania most of them do not survive for a long period. One of the factors that account for scarcity of long established SMEs is ineffective succession planning. The main of this research was to assess factors influencing succession planning in SMEs-, a case of selected enterprises in Dar es Salaam. The study specifically focused on assessing business and social characteristics of SMEs owners which influence succession planning. Descriptive approach was employed in the study. Primary data were collected using structured undisguised questionnaire supplied to SMEs owners selected randomly from a list obtained at National bureau of Statistics (NBS). Factors identified to have influence on succession planning includes age of owner, gender and education level of the owner of a firm, business size, involvement of family members in business and communication among family members of SMEs. Conclusions and recommendations from this study are said to have major managerial, academic and policy making implications. SMEs will continue to experience significant changes and this research study contributes to the continued advances in theory and practice of business succession planning in Tanzania.
