dc.description.abstractThis study was about urban waste management in housing cleanliness in Dare es-salaam. The study was conducted in Ilala Municipality. The study used both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Data were collected through interview, questionnaire and observation. With specific object of Find out the extent to which the wastes are collected from the houses for cleanliness in Ilala Municipality, another specific objective was to investigate factors contributing to the inadequacy of wastes collection from the houses in Ilala Municipality. The findings revealed that the magnitude of the problem was bad. To a larger extent, the problem of environmental cleanness in Ilala is in a bad degree with some worse effects, which adhere to the researcher-based observation and previous findings that Dar es Salaam's growth has led to an increased waste generation beyond the collection capacity which cannot be decomposed by natural factors at the rate that will affect the peoples. Lack of temporary disposal places at home settings was a problem to the appropriate waste management in Ilala. Pits are dug next to the houses (26 %) and 74.0 % were using plastic bags as instruments for depositing waste. Lack of preventive measures was found to be the root cause of many waste problems in Ilala District, hence the need to implement appropriate strategies for environmental safety.
