The purpose of this study was to examine the use of the classroom interaction method in the teaching and learning of mathematics in ordinary level secondary schools in Urban West Region, Zanzibar. Specifically, the study intended to examine the extent to which the classroom environment is conducive for teaching and learning mathematics in ordinary level secondary schools in Urban West Region Zanzibar, investigate the methods used in the teaching and learning of mathematics and examine the availability and use of materials in the teaching and learning of mathematics. The study was conducted in five ordinary level secondary schools in Urban West Region (three government schools and two non-government schools). The case study design with both qualitative and quantitative approaches was used. There were 165 respondents that included 5 heads of mathematics department, 10 mathematics teachers and 150 students. Data were gathered through classroom observation, questionnaires, documentary review and interviews. Qualitative data were subjected to content analysis, while Results obtained through questionnaires were analyzed using Statistical Package for software systems (SPSS). The study revealed that mathematics teachers mainly used the lecture method to teach mathematics. Few mathematics teachers used the interactive method involving only discussion and question and answer. It was found that the major hindrance to implementing the interactive method in the teaching and learning of mathematics was large class sizes and inadequate teaching and learning materials. The study recommended that the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training (MoEVT) provide regular in-service training for mathematics teachers in order to effectively manage and implement the curriculum. Appropriate teaching materials and textbooks need to be provided to facilitate mathematics teaching and learning. MoEVT has to realize that there is more to be done regarding the system in place, which relies too much on individual mathematics teaches’ efforts.en_US
