Abstract
This study was conducted in Chamwino district in Dodoma region in the central part of Tanzania. The study was conducted with the general objective to influence change in demand and price of the raw hides and skins through exposing suppliers to buyers using GIS. A case study research design and sampling techniques were adopted in data acquisition. A questionnaire, in-depth interview, focus group discussions, direct observation techniques and handheld GPS device were employed for data acquisition. The study revealed that there was a higher production of hides and skins in Chamwino district which did not benefit the livestock keepers; the study showed the limiting factors for change in demand and price of hides and skins were the major cause of fewer benefits from hides and skins to livestock keepers. Furthermore, many livestock keepers had limited information concerning the market price of hides and skins and were ignorant of the right buyers and market of hides and skins which resulted into higher dumping and misuse of hides and skins in the study area. Moreover, the study showed that the supply of hides and skins had the negative impact to livestock keepers and the nation due to loss of income and reduction of employment to youth which was caused by the poor demand and price of hides and skins that led to higher dumping and misuse of hides and skins. In the light of these findings, it is recommended that web map should be created to show and link the buyers and suppliers of hides and skins and transport infrastructure, this would help to simplify communication between buyers and sellers and improve the hides and skins enterprise. Also, other strategies of improving demand and price of hides and skins should be implemented such as establishing many leather processing industries, setting the directive prices of hides and skins and establishing the proper markets of hides and skins that should be known to all livestock keepers, suppliers of hides and skins and buyers for better interaction.
