dc.description.abstract | The study examined the role of civil society in the fight against corruption in Tanzania. Corruption principally results from the arbitrary use of public authority, which calls for the intervention of civil society. The study, therefore, was necessitated by the high prevalence of corruption in the country despite massive efforts undertaken by the state and non-state stakeholders to contain the vice. A case study approach was employed using two CSOs, Leadership Forum and Policy Forum. Findings of the study suggest that, although there is an improvement in the involvement of civil society in the fight against corruption compared to period before the 1990s liberalisation, the level of engagement remains superficial. On the positive side, the study found that the relationship between CSOs and the state anti-corruption agencies is generally harmonious and the two parts are working together in the struggle to stamp out the scourge. The study further identified strategies used by the civil society to promote citizens’ involvement in the fight and solicit policy-makers’ response for better policies and actions. These strategies, however, are not effective due to hitches in influencing changes from the state and provoking active participation from the citizens. Recommendations given to reverse the trend include the promotion of integrity approach in tackling the vice, empowerment of civil society and promotion of vibrant citizenry. | en_US |
