This study examined the awareness of the Copyright Law in Tanzania in relation to the local movie industry. Specifically, the study investigated the level of knowledge of local movie stakeholders, the sources used in accessing copyright law information, the factors that influence copyright law infringements in the local film industry and the strategies that can be used to promote copyright law awareness and adherence among local movie stakeholders in Tanzania. The study used both qualitative and quantitative methods. Data was collected through the use of questionnaires, interview guides and observation checklist. The study findings showed that copyright law awareness among film industry stakeholders in Tanzania is generally low. The study established that the major sources of information used by film stakeholders to access information pertaining to copyright law are television and newspapers. Yet, the sources of information used were inadequate in providing adequate copyright law information. The major barriers to accessing copyright law information among local film stakeholders were identified as lack of money and lack of information seeking. The majority (84.9%) reported corruption as a major factor which contributes to copyright law infringement, followed by inadequate enforcement of the law and lack of copyright law awareness. Based on the findings, the study recommends the use of the mass media, seminars and training to raise awareness on copyright coupled with the enforcement of the existing copyright laws. Moreover, copyright education should be incorporated in school syllabuses. Furthermore, the outdated copyright laws should be revised and institutions involved in protecting copyright should be increased.en_US
