Abstract
This dissertation is an attempt to analyze the dramatic elements 6at are found in Bongo flava musical videos, using three examples to back up my analysis. The music video industry in Tanzania has literally exploded in recent years, and it inspired me to find a link between Bongo .Papa music videos and drama as a mode of communicating to the public. Do Bongo music videos contain dramatic elements? What is drama, and how does it relate to society? I got the information for this study from libraries, where I went through different books, magazines, journals and newspapers. I also watched several Bongo videocassettes and television music programs. This paper gives the history and meaning of Bongo flava, explains the development of video Arts and television in Tanzania, and describes forms of Bongo flava video performances. It also suggests ways of understanding a performance whether is dramatic or not. Finally, this dissertation recommends to musicians to really think about the intended meaning of their music videos; to realize their potential for communicating issues to the public and let the picture speak by it self, since in video audience get the message through picture and sound. This requires a greater investment into the project, both technically and emotionally.
