Factors affecting performance and internationalization of small and medium manufacturing enterprises: a case study of Dar es Salaam's firms

Abstract
Finn internationalization has been researched for many years but SMEs in less developed countries has not been given much attention. This study examines the factors affecting small and medium manufacturing enterprises in export participation and performance in Tanzania. Specific objectives were to examine the extent, to which firm specific factors, finance access and government regulations affect export participation and performance of Tanzania manufacturing SMEs. The study used survey research methodology to collect data from 70 SMEs in Dar es Salaam region. Data were analyzed descriptively using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) and findings presented as per objectives. The results indicated that internationalization of manufacturing SMEs is affected by adequacy capital, managerial expertise and experience, technology used in production, information access, requirements for loans from financial institutions, credit access when needed, tax charges, permit to start firm operations, and regulations of the governments. Pre and post export finance and license access were found to be insignificant factors. Therefore the study recommends for proper policy interventions that will encourage internationalization of SMEs that manufacture its products. This includes government to differentiate regulations in different firm sizes, reduce tax charges for export products, credit access to beaeasily for the firms that meet requirements, government to provide finance support, use modem technology in production and trainings to be provided to labors and management of export skills and knowledge.
