Abstract

The study was set to examine the role of democracy and good governance in maintaining peace in Mainland Tanzania. Specifically, this study sought to evaluate nature and statutes of conflicts and their resolutions for peace maintenance in Mainland Tanzania; to assess applicability of traditional factors to peace in Mainland Tanzania; to determine whether or not good governance contributes to peace in Mainland Tanzania; and, to determine whether or not democracy contributes to peace in mainland Tanzania. The study was conducted in Dar es Salaam region. The sample of 100 respondents for the study was drawn from political, religious and educational institutions. The researcher used explorative research design through qualitative and quantitative research approaches. Data collection methods included questionnaires, interviews to key informants, Focus Group Discussions and documentary reviews. The study found that conflicts, which have emanated in societies recently, have not been resolved well. Some of the conflicts have remained latent. Many respondents agreed that good governance and democracy are potentially good factors for sustaining peace, despite their dissatisfaction with how both they practised in the country. For, the study revealed that most principles of good governance and democracies were unenhanced. The study concludes that Mainland Tanzanians acknowledge a significant role of democracy and good governance in maintaining peace in the country. The study recommends that the government and other stakeholders should seriously consider in promoting further democracy and good governance.
