dc.description.abstractThis study examined the collection development in Fine and Performing Art (FPA) subjects at the University of Dar es Salaam library. The study used a combination of methods to collect data, including face-to-face interviews, a self-administered questionnaire and observations. The respondents were drawn from library staff (acquisition section), students and lecturers from the Department of Fine and Performing Arts. Key findings from the study reveal that, there are inadequate learning materials in Fine and Performing Art in the University of Dar es Salaam Library. This problem was attributed to factors such as low level of awareness on collection development activities among students and lecturers in Fine and Performing Art, the absence of subject specialist in the library, poor communication between library staff and Fine and Performing Art staff, inadequate funding, high cost of materials and lack of a written library collection development policy. The findings also reveal that, the library is highly dependent on donor funding. Moreover, the library does not have a selection committee. The study, therefore, recommends that the library should develop a collection development policy and set up a selection committee with representatives drawn from all colleges, schools, departments and institutes. Furthermore, the Library should recruit more subject specialists to cover the neglected areas. In addition, the library should find other sources of funding to strengthen collection development and help promote balanced collections for different disciplines.en_US
