Abstract
In recent times, there has been a national outcry about high prevalence of incidents of schoolgirl pregnancy in primary and secondary schools in Tanzania. The objective of this study were to study the extent, trends, and patterns of schoolgirl pregnancy and explore the level of cooperation and effectiveness in managing incidents of such pregnancies over the past five years (2002-2006). It was assumed that the incidents would be very high rising to justify the alarm and that there would be high level of cooperation and effectiveness in managing such pregnancies. The study involved six beads of school, two heads of law enforcing agents, three officials of local government authorities. The finding shows that the incidents and trends of schoolgirl pregnancies were very low and flustering, with an average pregnancy rates of 0.09% in primary schools, and 0.69 in secondary schools. The level of cooperation between schools and other parties was found to be surprisingly low, hand in hand with low level of effectiveness in managing the problem, characterized by compromises out of courts and minimal availability and use of the Education Circulars No.6 of 1998 and 2004. It was also found that all the girls who got pregnant in primary schools, and most of them in secondary schools, were older than their school age. It is recommended that mass campaigns and class room sessions on causes and consequences of schoolgirl pregnancy should be mounted at different places.
