Abstract
This study aimed at examining contribution of itinerant teachers in provision of primary education for children with visual impairment in Tanzania. Using Kibaha itinerant teaching programme as a case study, it examined Rolex of itinerant teachers, which contribute to provision of primary school education for children with visual impairment, challenges faced by itinerant teachers in the provision of itinerant services for children with visual impairment and to identify measures that could be taken to improve the itinerant teachers in the provision of itinerant services for children with visual impairment and to identify measures that could be taken to improve the itinerant teaching programme. The study used qualitative research approach where data were collected through observation, interviews and documentary review. The study used the sample of 41 participants, which involved education administrators at various levels, education quality assurers, specialist, teachers, children with visual impairment as well as parents of children with visual impairment as well as parents of children with visual impairment. Their contribution is realized through their roles, which include identification of children with visual impairment, making assessments and referrals, dealing with pre-primary school education for children with visual impairment as well as parents of children with visual impairment. Purposive and snowball sampling procedures were employed in obtaining the sample, Moreover, all data were analyzed through content analysis and presented by using descriptive method. Findings indicated that itinerant teachers play a great contribution in provision of primary school education for children with visual impairment. Their contribution is realized through their roles, which include identification of children with visual impairment, making assessment and referrals, dealing with pre-primary school children at home, helping teachers and children at school, provision of counseling and practical support including sensitization and awareness creation to the community, Also, The study revealed challenges that prohibit effective implementation of the itinerant teaching program. They include lack of adequate financial resources, few numbers of itinerant teachers, lack of transport of facilities, lack of community
