dc.description.abstract | This study investigated the impact of cost sharing on students, in higher learning institutions. It is a case study of the University of Dar es Salaam and Ardhi University in Dar es Salaam region in Tanzania. The study adapted a survey design. The study employed qualitative and quantitative research approach to assess the impact of cost sharing on students in higher learning institutions in Dar es Salaam region. Qualitative and quantitative techniques were used in data collection. Primary data were obtained from the field in two selected higher learning institutions in Dar es Salaam while secondary data were obtained from various literatures. The study found that that there was increment of enrolment in both institutions since the introduction of cost sharing in higher learning institutions. This was due to the increase in number of students who completed advanced level. Also the expansion of government financial support through loan board which was responsible to locate students’ loan grades. On other hand the study discovered that there was drop out of student’s academic performance due to the number of reasons which included lack of sufficient learning materials, economic hardship, psychological problem and falure to get darly meals. Likewise the study result showed that cost sharing was a major reason for the occurrences of crisis and demonstrations in the higher learning institutions, these resulted into interruption of timetable, postponement of examinations, and failure of students to attend classes. The study recommended that, the government should provide full sponsorships to students without regarding in the background of the student. This will help students from low- income families to attend in the higher education. The government should maintain quality performance or also increasing the performance of students in order to maintain university academic status. | en_US |
