Lokere is one of eleven catchments in Kyoga water management zone (KWMZ).The problems of food insecurity and water scarcity have taken a trend in the catchment. Water scarcity levels are pronounced in the catchment exacerbated by desiccating water storage structure. An attempt was made to validate suitability of RWH and storage facilities locations that would inform decision making. The objective of this study was to develop geospatial based approach for efficient catchment planning. Field investigation was undertaken to map out existing and suggested locations for RWH and storage structures. Geospatial methods MCDA/AHP and SWAT were employed in identification of suitable zones for RWH and storage. Also five criteria namely; LULC, soil texture, slope, emissivity and drainage density were selected, ranked and weighted using Saaty’s scale of importance and supplemented with expert opinion to suitability criteria. The SWAT model has been used to generate dam properties i.e. drainage area, effective height and volume of run-off harvested. The study revealed that high and very high suitability zones cover 495.6 km2while 55% of existing and 90% of suggested locations fall within suitable zones. Also, the highest harvested run-off volumes are in hydrological response unit (HRU) number 28 with 11,234 million meter3. Hence, suggested storage structure number 4 can be up to 5 million meter3 or more. Therefore, planning for a larger number of viable locations for RHW structure at timely and cost effective manner is resolved. In this way it can be inferred that there is an opportunity for using RWH structures to ensure long term water demands are resolved in Uganda.en_US
