Abstract
This study aimed at examining staff retention strategies in private learning institutions in Tanzania, using the Archdiocese of Dar es Salaam secondary schools as a case study. To collect the requisite data, questionnaires, interviews and documentary reviews were used. Self-administered questionnaires were distributed to 100 respondents, who yielded an 85 percent return rate. The data collected were analysed with the help of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), particularly in cross tabulation. In consequence, the findings were tabulated and summarized, with percentages obtained. The study findings show that majority of the Archdiocese of Dar es Salaam secondary school employees were not satisfied with their jobs. In addition, the study findings revealed that the present retention strategies were not found to be effectively implemented. Shortcomings were evident in the organization’s way of enabling employees to balance work and life; the salary package; promotion practices; and provision of medical and insurance benefits. Nevertheless, the study found that there were some retention strategies employed by the institution that to a certain extent influenced employees to stay. Based on the study findings, it is recommended that human resource policy should be improved to make the staff retention strategies reflect the reality on the ground. To create effective retention strategies policy- makers should develop a human resource policy that caters for both financial and non-financial benefits, in addition to providing a corporate culture.
