Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the factors influencing the adoption of BDS services to the SMEs. Specifically the study sought to identify SMEs’ awareness on BDS, to identify the SMEs’ demand for BDS, to examine Companies experience and satisfaction with the quality of used services and to assess challenges facing SMEs in adopting BDS in Tanzania especially in Dar es Salaam. The study selected a sample of 100 owners of BDS services operating in Dar es Salaam. Data collection was through questionnaire and interview schedules. Data analysis was done by the use of Statistical Package of Social Science (SPSS) and Microsoft Excel.
The study revealed that SMEs’ awareness on BDS in Tanzania is relatively in low levels, also, some respondents they never accessed BDS services due to high cost, stringent conditions and lack of proper information regarding the benefits of BDS to SMEs business. It was found that the quality of BDS was far from satisfactory; likewise, it was revealed that SMEs adopted BDS services. The study concludes that there is a high potential demand for support services from SMEs. The government is responsible for the overall functioning of the support BDS services and focuses on policy coordination and regulation enforcement. The study recommends that there should be cooperation between BDS services in order to support SMEs in Tanzania, allow private sector (BDS) providers should initiate new services, programmes and training sessions as widely as possible in order to provide diversified and comprehensive development services to SMEs.
