Abstract
As the film industry in Tanzania continues to grow, film piracy also gains momentum. To combat the problem of film piracy, the government established the Copyright Society of Tanzania (COSOTA) as an institution that promotes copyright and combats infringement of those rights. This study makes an effort to look at the problem of film piracy in Tanzania. The study attempts to find out the challenges film makers and film distributors encounter from film piracy and also their contribution in the fight against film piracy. But to a large extent the study is centered on looking at the level of film piracy in Tanzania. The study also considers the strategies COSOTA uses to combat film piracy and the challenges COSOTA faces in fighting film piracy. Through area of the study, sampling procedure, data collection and techniques, library research semi-structured interviews, Focus Group discussions and case study, the study investigates the problem of film piracy in Tanzania and the challenges COSOTA faces in combating film piracy. The study conducted in Dar es Salaam has revealed that, the problem of film piracy in Tanzania is immense and it has an adverse effect on film makers and film producers. To combat film piracy COSOTA and other film stakeholders face many challenges such as lack of manpower, lack of support from police and disunity among themselves. The study also proposes that to combat those challenges the government should increase financial and human resources, COSOTA must be authorized to seize and destroy all instruments used by culprits in film piracy, and lastly COSOTA should invest in creating awareness to the society and film stakeholders
