This research paper analyzes the ability of the East African Community (EAC) to respond to the regional threat of terrorism. It is based on three research objectives. To examine the challenges faced by the EAC in countering terrorism. To examine and evaluate EAC counter terrorism activities. To advocate appropriate actions that can be undertaken to make reasonable improvements in the fight against terrorism in the region. Findings show that the major challenges facing the community have been the perception of people in relating terrorism with the Islamic religion, issues on the legal framework, absence of a formal counter radicalization strategy, large porous borders and the lack of enough civil involvement in the fight. Moreover, the study has revealed that the failure to implement the strategies and initiatives agreed upon is another step back together with having irrelevant or poor activities and engagements. Furthermore, the study has indicated the important areas where EA countries are working jointly such as in counter terrorism trainings/exercises and intelligence sharing. In concluding remarks, this research paper recommends various ways to improve the fight against terrorism in the region. Among others, is the importance of dealing with the root cause of terrorism, developing and adapting a comprehensive regional counter radicalization strategy and establishing a dedicated specialized operational force? Finally, civilians and other stakeholders should be actively involved in combating terrorism.en_US
