Abstract
This study deals with the impact of HIV/AIDS on the active labour force in Dar es Salaam. The focus of the study is on the Dar es Salaam region and specifically the three districts of Ilala, Temeke and Kinondoni. Although HIV/AIDS has affected each group the study focuses more on the active youth labour force and particular the 15-24 age group. Various studies on HIV/AIDS have tended to focus on this age group of the labour force for various reasons including the fact that it is this group which is most at risk of contracting the HIV/AIDS due to the reproductive age activities. Furthermore, as this youthful age group is infected with the disease, the other effects to the society emerge including loss of labour force due to illness and eventually death.
Similarly there are other impacts to the society including loss of savings and additional costs related to caring for the sick youth. Both secondary and primary data sources were used to collect data for this study. The limitation of these sources being; however that due to the social stigma .surrounding the HIV/AIDS disease it was difficulty to get a large sample of respondents in the three districts. The results emerge from this study tend to confirm the results obtained by other studies. That is the HIV/AIDS scope has a profound impact on labour force among the youths. Besides reducing the magnitude of youth labour force through death there are other significant effects which include reduction in incomes and wages, loss of savings, costs inflicted through taking care of sick youths. The findings from this study point at the three main recommendations namely increased educational campaign against the spread of HIV/AIDS, evaluation of factors influencing risk behaviour and to undertake HIV/AIDS preventive measure.
