Abstract
This study aimed at assessing the contribution of small scale farmer’s networks in poverty reduction in Tanzania; the case of National Network of Small-Scale Farmers Groups in Tanzania. It focused on assessing whether small-scale farmers are aware of this network and its benefits, examining if projects undertaken are improving their life standard, and lastly, identifying whether the introduction of modern agricultural practice has improved productivity and hence life standard of small scale farmers. Both primary and secondary data were used. Primary data were collected through observations, face-to-face interviews and questionnaire. The sample of 50 respondents was drawn from Morogoro and Dodoma regions. Data were analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively. Through SPSS, cross tabulation and frequencies were obtained which formed the basis for analysis and interpretation of data. Findings reveal that, most small-scale farmers are aware of MVIWATA activities, and that they are benefiting from it. It helps them get extension services which have positive impact to productivity and access to market. This study concluded that, MVIWATA is helping small scale farmer’s groups to improve life standard through more production which leads into better access to basic needs, investment and savings. It was therefore recommended that, the government (GoT) should work closely with MVIWATA and other farmer’s networks to facilitate provision of extension services, fair distribution of agricultural inputs, access to market and policies that will favor small scale farmers as propounded by “KILIMO KWANZA” meaning “Agriculture first initiative”.
