| dc.description.abstract | The aim of this study was to investigate on indiscipline as a perceived cause of low performance in certificate of secondary education examinations in community schools. The study was conducted in Mtwara Mikindani Municipality and it involved eighty-three respondents from selected schools namely Chuno, Mikindani, Raha Leo, Sabasaba Sino, and Shangani secondary schools. Specifically, the study examined economically based indiscipline, including students stealing peers properties, involvement in truancy, adultery and involvement in petty trade. It also analyses emotionally based indiscipline including students lying to teachers, stress, bullying, lack of interest to do homework and frustration due to love affairs. It further explored socially based indiscipline including students fighting, involvement in drug abuse, teenage pregnancies and attending night disco (vigodoro).These were perceived to be causes of low performance. Multiple methods of data collection were used. Questionnaires interviews, documentary reviews and observation were used as instruments of collecting data for the last five years that is, from 2008 to 2012. The findings of the study reveal that the state of the family affects the child since the parents are the first socializing agents in an individual’s life. Also the study found that the family background and the context of a child affect his/her reaction to life situations and level of performance. The findings further reveal that the experiences make up the individual’s life during school period, parents and individual’s experiences at home play a tremendous role in the moral and academic performance of their children. That is to say, indiscipline plays a big role as a perceived cause of low performance in schools. It was observed furthermore, that parents have an important role to play in curbing indiscipline of the children when they are at school or at home. The findings revealed that economically; students were not supported by their parents to get essential needs. Students whose attention span is impaired emotionally could be indiscipline and under-achievement. It was further observed that socially, the notorious students came from homes where parents did not care about what goes on in school. Once a student knows that an impromptu visit can be done to him by parents, such a student would be very careful and this would help them to be more disciplined. Good discipline provides for a child’s framework of conduct that is approved and accepted in any culture or community. From the findings of the study it is recommended that administrators, educators, parents and other stakeholders have to cooperate in order to successfully deal with indiscipline problems of children by cherishing good communication among them in order to increase the performance of their schools. | en_US |
