Abstract
This study was undertaken in Kinondoni District, Dar-es-salaam region. With the aim to investigate communication amongst parents and adolescents on sex education and practice of safer sex in Kinondoni district. Local communities within Kinondoni District were selected using stratified sampling technique. The participants were randomly selected, and a total of 60 parents with children above 10 to 19 years old were selected. These were the biological parents or guardians who had experience of rearing the adolescent’s children at specified time, and 60 adolescents with age between above 10 to 19 from selected schools were interviewed. The results of this study indicated that only 28.7% of parents communicated sexual and reproductive health matters with their children. The study observed that what parents discussed with their children was not enough and the mode of discussion was generally not friendly or non- interactive. In most cases parents dominated the discussions. The major findings arising from the study was that most parents had not accepted their role towards informing the adolescent’s children on sexual related matters. Some parents took the role of informing their children on the subject matter, while others had shown willingness of doing so, but they were prohibited by their cultural restrictions. The study recommended that parents should be encouraged to accept that they were the primary educators of their children. They should be urged to consider sexual communication as an important ingredient in child upbringing. The content of sexual information, which parents delivered to their adolescent’s children, had to be comprehensive and it should include all essential components, most vital the maturation process and its challenges.
