The contribution of sustainable wetland management to improve community livelihoods in Zanzibar: A Case of Cheju Wetland Plain in Central District

| dc.description.abstract | Cheju wetland in Majenzi, Hanyegwa and Mseweni villages was taken as a referenced case study representing other wetland resources in different parts of Zanzibar. In general, this study intended to come up with an assessment showing the extent to which wetland resources can contribute to the livelihoods of the respective community. A considerable household survey (N=56) of 10% sampled population, seven (7) members of focus group discussion and five (5) key informants were involved. Techniques such as field observation and transit walk were employed in data gathering and verification. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) and Excel version 20 were used to analyze quantitative data and results were presented through graphs and tables. On the other hand, qualitative data were analyzed based on the content collected and presented through plates and description. Findings showed the majority of households from the respective communities use wetland for crop production (68.2%) and livestock (22.3%) acting as significant bases of community livelihoods. Many people derive from and depend on this wetland resource for their livelihoods. In spite of its significance to the community, the resource is currently subjected to various challenges and management obstacles. These include climatic variability, conflicts, poor management, lack of skilled personnel and motivation which threaten its status and productivity. The challenges lower its contribution capacity; hence, different stakeholders’ participation with the respective communities is needed to plan and implement management activities so as to sustain this resource. So that, activities such as see weeds controlling, planting trees, environmental impact assessment, skilled personnel, more investment opportunities and more studies were suggested within the study area. | en_US |
