Abstract
The study aimed at assessing the undergraduate students’ inclination toward self-employment, and examining how the acquired entrepreneurship knowledge and skills motivate them to start their own businesses. Specifically, the study assessed students’ interest to start their own enterprise, perceived risk related to self-employment; and entrepreneurship skills and attributes’ motivation toward self-employment. It also examined perceived opportunities for formal employment and students’ business background influence toward inclination to self-employment. The study was done at the University of Dar es Salaam, Business School (UDBS) in which a questionnaire was used to obtain information from 384 respondents (third year students). Data analysis was done using ANOVA, factor analysis, and other descriptive statistics. The findings show that the majority of students were highly inclined toward self-employment. In addition, the independent variables; students’ perceived risk for self-employment, entrepreneurship skills, and attributes, perceived opportunities for formal employment and students’ business background show a positive and significance relation with the dependent variable (self-employment). The study recommends to universities, to mainstream entrepreneurship into curriculum and exposes students to entrepreneurial opportunities by linking them with small and medium enterprises so as to encourage learning by doing. At policy level, there should be SME, Trade and Industrial policy and employment policy that will create enabling environment for the youth who opt for self-employment to operate smoothly. It also recommends that at family level, parents/guardians should involve their children in running family businesses.
