dc.description.abstractThis study assessed the quality of care and support services offered by orphanages to orphans in Tanzania with a focus on selected centres in Arusha region. The study covered two districts namely, Arusha and Arumeru. The study involved a total of 84 respondents including 66 orphans. 17 directors of orphanage centres and one officer from regional social welfare officer Primary data were collected through interviews, observation while secondary data were collected through documentary reviews. The stud\ revealed that the majority of orphans had opted to live in orphanages because the latter were the only place from which they could seek care and support. Most of the orphanages that were visited provided three types of support namely educational support, basic needs support and psychosocial support. Orphanages centres, it was noted, regularly encountered problems that were mainly related to poor financial bases. To solve those problems, orphanages centres begged money from prominent people or organised fund-raising campaigns through religious bodies. The study gave recommendations to the national Department of Social Welfare (DSW), which is under the Ministry of Health (MoH), to local and international donors and to the registrar of orphanages on measures diet could be taken to improve the quality of care and support services offered to orphans in the orphanages.en_US
