Abstract
The purpose of the study was to assess customer perception on open and distance education mode in secondary education system in Tanzania. Specifically, the study sought to determine the extent to which information asymmetry, culture and nature of private service providers affect customer perception. The study was conducted in Dar es Salaam region and involved 111 randomly selected respondents from three open schools. Five (5) key informants were picked for the study, two from Tanzania Institute of Adult Education (TIAE) and three (3) from municipal for in-depth information. The inquiry was carried out using structured questionnaires to capture the existing relationship between independent and dependent variables identified for testing. Interviews were used to capture in-depth information for the study. Data were subjected to both descriptive and inferential analyses using Scientific Package for Social Sciences (SPSS version 16). In this study, multiple regressions were performed. Results from the study indicated that the two variables, namely, information asymmetry and cultural attributes have a positive significant influence on customer perception on open and distance education, whereas the nature of private open school’s attributes was found to be insignificant, although having a positive influence. The study recommends that the government must increase level of publicity towards secondary education by distance mode to the public. The registered open schools should also address to the present standards for offering distance education.
