dc.description.abstractThis study was carried out with the purpose of examining household and cultural responsibilities and how they impacted time management among day secondary school students in Butiama district, Tanzania. Three research objectives were formulated to guide the study and these involved to: Identify various household and cultural activities day secondary school students engage with at their families; Assess how these household and cultural activities disrupt the proper use of study time among day secondary school students; and to examine how home and school environments enhance various household activities in disrupting the proper use of students’ study time. The study employed a qualitative approach with case study design guided by “Time Management and Learning Outputs Model.” Also, it involved 180 respondents of whom 160 were students, 4 discipline teachers, 4 heads of schools, and 12 parents, who were selected and studied through purposive, convenient, stratified and random purposive sampling. Open-ended questionnaires, focus group discussions, visual representation of activities, interviews, documentary review and non-participant observations were used in collecting data that were subjected to content analysis. The results show that students were engaged in various household and cultural activities as determined by the way of life prevailing in each of the family and the wider community. Secondly, the poor planning, operation and management of household and cultural activities led to students’ excessive engagement leaving them tired with little or no study time, lack of focus in the daily learning timetable, irregular attendances in schools which leading to miss the lessons and realising difficulties in understanding the taught knowledge, failure to conduct their self-studies properly, revisions, discussions, completing assignments and homework, hence poor academic performance. Lastly, it is also revealed that, economic difficulties in the families, parents’ little concern and attitude to supervise and monitor children daily routines were among the factors that pushed students to indulge in those activities. Besides, schools also had several household related activities which involved students in different times of the day without regarding the teaching-learning timetable. Thus, it was concluded that poor planning, organisation, allocation, implementation, supervision, and monitoring of household and cultural activities contributed toward disrupting the proper use of students’ study time and completion of various learning activities hence poor performance in their studies. Therefore, the study recommends emphasis on education related to the proper allocation and implementation of various household and cultural activities with regard to students’ learning timetable in enhancing academic performance among day secondary school students.en_US
