| dc.description.abstract | The aim of the study was to examine distance education and factors influencing learning at Open University of Tanzania. The study was conducted in Dar es Salaam at Kinondoni center. The study was guided by the researcher’s own conceptual framework with insight from Farajollahi & Zarifsanayei (2010) model of distance learning and ICT Based Education Concepts. The study employed qualitative approach. Data was collected through interview, focus group discussion and documentary review. Findings indicate that OUT offers degrees and non-degree programmes through distance education. It was found that, learners heavily relied on self learning, discussion and face to face sessions as the means of acquiring skills, attitude and knowledge related to the course content. Furthermore, it was found that communication between students and learners access to Information and Communication Technology, resources at the study centre, study materials, library services and feedback were the major factors that influence learning at OUT. Furthermore, it was found that time management, use of information and communication technology, and English language proficiency were also key factors influencing learning at OUT. The study recommended that factors influencing learning identified in the present study to be addressed by relevant organ and future study to examine in detail strategies to improve provision of distance education based on the findings of the present study | en_US |
